The Case Studies

There were six case studies each of which were carefully chosen to be representative of the study population, taking account of stage (S2, transition and Pr6),  gender and the degree of initial concern about the pupil. The intention had been to select:

  • 1 pupil from each Cluster (ie. 4 from Aberdeenshire and 2 from Falkirk)
  • 2 Pr6 pupils, 2 transition pupils and 2 S2 pupils
  • 4 boys and 2 girls
  • 2 pupils of low concern (they had been included within the project for preventative reasons), 2 pupils of concern and 2 pupils of high concern, as ascertained from the pupil nomination forms.

However, one Case study pupil needed to be substituted, resulting in:

  • 3 Pr6 pupils, 1 transition pupil and 2 S2 pupils
  • 3 boys and 3 girls
  • 3 pupils of low concern (they had been included within the project for preventative reasons), 1 pupil of concern and 2 pupils of high concern, as ascertained from the pupil nomination forms. [It later transpired that one of the case studies of low concern came from a very difficult home background.]

At the end of intervention, interviews were held with:

  • the pupil
  • their parent(s) or guardian
  • their Support Group Leader(s)
  • either a class teacher (Primary school) or Pastoral Care Teacher (Secondary school).
Questionnaires were also issued to:
  • the pupil
  • their parent(s) or guardian
  • their Support Group Leader(s)
  • either a class teacher (Primary school) or Pastoral Care Teacher (Secondary school)
  • a sample of class teachers in the Secondary school (English, Maths and a teacher of the pupil’s choosing).
In order to ascertain whether any gains had been maintained, interviews were carried out one or two years after intervention with the pupil and Support Group Leader (in one case, the Pastoral Care Teacher when the SGL had moved to another school).
